Image file format in the FAQ and instructions should be PNG

Message par PrimeGoat » 14 Avril 2020, 08:27

Hello,

I have noticed that the instructions specify to use JPG files. This is a bad idea. Even at full quality, JPEG is a lossy image format and will distort the image. The best option for use here are PNG files. They support lossless compression and also transparency if needed. It is very important for these files to be as high quality as possible, and recommending users to use JPEG is a bad idea.

Also, 600ppi for scanning is ok, but it's really better to use at least 1200ppi. This allows for much more flexibility when it comes to descreening and overall retouching.

Hello, I think that png format is better and maximun scan ppi too, but size will be increment some times, for preservation purpuses the ideal one will be at least 600 ppi and png or jpg without any compression and preserve too the raw because it is better for future new retouchs that to use a previus used files.

But in the other side I do not use 1200ppi files because I will need a big hard disk only for files and we do not know how much is nintandbox space and the worse the bandwidth for support it.
I have Actraiser in:
600 ppi and it needs 298MB for PSD file
300 ppi its only needs 80MB
Png at 300 is 32MB
and 17MB for Jpg.
for A3 box.

In the other side we have box for print that I suppose that is the most use of the boxes, then when you print it, the quality depends of other factors like paper quality, printer, etc. And 300 ppi if you do not check very near box you cannot see difference between 300 or 600 ppi quality, I am not a expert because I do not print box, but maybe you only can see difference in texts.

Anyway always is better quality, you can send bigger sizes files and the somebody can check and choose if make it small or preserve like it. You can put too in external space like archive or other places.

Regards.

Setolam,

I'd like to point out that you should use compression with your PNG files. PNG uses lossless compression, which means that no quality is lost. It is 1:1, perfect with no degradation. JPG on the other hand, degrades even if you totally disable compression. So I recommend NEVER using JPG. Always PNG, and if you're gonna make templates, then .PSD. And yes, PSD can get pretty big. But the PSD you keep for internal use, and export as PNG for sharing/uploading.

Retouched ready-to-print files can be 600dpi. Or even 720dpi if you're using a printer like Epson R2000, which is 1440dpi. That's fine. But when you're dealing with raw scans, it's best to scan at 1200ppi. This allows for correction and filtering, de-screening, etc. When all the touchup work is done, the production file can be scaled down to 600dpi if necessary. 600ppi for a raw scan, however, isn't so good, and 1200ppi is recommended. 300ppi is definitely too small.
